All east-facing beaches, from Anahola Beach to Lydgate Beach Park, and all North Shore beaches, west of Hanalei, are closed to swimming today due to high surf and hazardous ocean conditions. Officials have reopened swimming at Poipu Beach today, with the exception of Nukumoi Point, where a strong and dangerous rip current has formed near the tombolo.
Lifeguards are prohibiting swimming in these areas until further notice.
The National Weather Service has extended the High Surf Warning for all east-facing shores until 6 p.m. Thursday as a large northeast swell associated with Hurricane Ignacio will continue to produce warning level surf. Hurricane Jimena is also expected to create a large east swell, which will likely maintain high surf through the weekend.
Ocean Safety officials are also urging beachgoers to stay out of brown and turbid water as a safety precaution.
