LIHUE — Kapaa junior varsity quarterback Teili Fonua ran for two touchdowns and passed for one to lead the JV Warriors to a 48-17 win over Kauai Friday night at Vidinha Stadium.
Kalena Harder added two touchdowns, and Kauai’s Bryceson Abigania ran for two touchdowns to keep Kauai in the game.
Fonua opened the score books with five minutes showing in the first quarter, peeling off 15 yards for the touchdown, the Warriors taking an 8-0 lead behind a point-after run.
Kauai answered when Abigania took the first play from scrimmage following the kickoff, rolling for 63 yards and a touchdown. Jonathan Benitez kicked the point-after for the 8-7 deficit.
The Warriors surged ahead behind two touchdowns, a 56-yard run by Fonua and a 39-yard run from Harder in the first quarter to give Kapaa a 22-7 lead at the buzzer.
Fonua connected with Jai Alapai on a 70-yard touchdown aerial to open the second quarter.
Kauai’s Abigania took the ensuing kickoff 70 yards to answer the score, Benitez doing the PAT boot for the 28-14 reading.
Kapaa put up one score when Harder peeled off 73 yards with 6:44 showing in the half for the bulge at the break, Raffy Perono running in the point-after for the 36-14 halftime lead.
