LIHUE – The Kauai County Planning Department received verification from the State Historic Preservation Division that Coco Palms Hui, LLC has met its agency requirements related to the demolition and reconstruction of the Coco Palms Hotel, the county stated in a press release Wednesday evening.
That approval was the last authorization necessary to allow Coco Palms Hui to begin demolition.
Given the approval, the county has released the building permits for demolition of structures effective Wednesday. Based on requirements set forth by the Planning Commission, demolition of the designated structures must be completed within six months.
“I am grateful for the work of the Planning Commission and the Planning Department, which allows forward progress on the demolition activities that the people of Kauai have so long sought,” stated Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr. “We’re also appreciative of the State Historic Preservation Division’s cooperation with the hui to ensure this historically significant site is appropriately preserved.”
