LIHUE – Hawaii residents may now go online to register to vote.
The new service may be accessed through the state Office of Elections website at www.elections.hawaii.gov/voter-registration.
The non-partisan League of Women Voters heralded the innovation, and said it hopes that making it more convenient to register to vote will help boost voter turnout in Hawaii.
“Thursday is the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act,” League President Ann Shaver said. “We can’t think of a better way to celebrate this anniversary than for unregistered eligible citizens to register to vote.”
To register online, a person must be a citizen of the United States, a legal resident of Hawaii, and at least 16 years old with a valid state ID and Social Security number.
