LIHUE — The Kauai Police Department is investigating an apparent fire bombing of a pickup truck.
According to a preliminary report, a suspect threw an unknown object into the bed of Joshua Rex’s pickup truck sometime before 2:30 a.m. as he was driving southbound on Kuhio Highway near Kalihiwai Road.
The object apparently ignited and started a fire, which partially burned the vehicle’s paint, bed liner, and some clothes that were in the bed of the truck. Rex was able to stop the vehicle and extinguish the flames.
The incendiary device was described as a Molotov cocktail in news reports, although police said that has yet to be officially determined.
According to Kauai Police Department spokeswoman Sarah Blane, police are investigating the incident as a reckless endangerment that could have placed Rex at risk of death. There are no suspects at this time.
Rex couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.
