KALAHEO — Fans at the Kaulupono Summer Basketball League games were ignited by a 1-point lead that swayed back-and-forth for nearly all of the 32 minutes of play Tuesday night between the Dream Team and Kaulupono division 4 girls at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
In a classic East (Dream Team)-West (Kaulupono) showdown, the girls battled fiercely with Kaulupono limiting the Dream Team’s star Alexie Ann Yam to six points. Kaulupono also shut out Kiani Pia Salvador. But the effort came up short in the final minutes as Tracelle Iwamoto scored nine points and led the Dream Team to a 29-24 win.
Glydelle Valmoja led the Kaulupono effort on eight points as well as strong play on defense. She got help from Hazel Serapio, who netted six points along with Tasia Kamoku. Kaylah Santos came up with buckets in the first and second half for her four points.
Earlier in the evening, Tia Jaquias put up eight points to lead the Team Central division 4 girls to a 26-6 showing over the Central Hoops wahine who got a pair from Annie Nizo.
On the boys’ arena, Loni Tafea and Poki Tafea teamed up with six points apiece to lead the Kanu Elite division 4 boys to a 36-20 win over Team Lihue, who got a game-high 11 points from Michael Questin and four points from Ernesto Alcones.
Matthew Rivera dropped a game-high 11 points to lead the Kauai Thunder division 4 boys to a 25-15 win over Papalina who got five points from Ty Tsukayama.
Just two more games remain on the Kaulupono Summer Basketball League schedule on Thursday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m.
