KEKAHA — The Kauai County employee killed while working at the Kekaha landfill Sunday has been named.
Gary Soto, 56, was operating a road grader about 8:55 a.m. when he died in what has been described as an industrial accident. No further details about the incident have been released.
On Monday, Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. issued a statement of condolence.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our county employee Gary Soto. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” Carvalho said. “It’s never easy when this type of thing happens, but we are providing our employees, particularly landfill employees, with support through the Employee Assistance Program and whatever else they need. We already had one session with them yesterday and will be doing more.”
The Kauai Police Department and the state Occupational Safety and Health division are investigating the incident; the county is conducting an internal investigation as well. County spokesperson Mary Daubert said she expects those investigations will take several weeks to complete.
