LIHUE — The Kauai Fire Department had responded to a total of five small brush fires by early Saturday of the holiday weekend. All of the fires occurred during overnight hours and most were less than an acre in size.
Two fires broke out in Anahola late Thursday night — one near Pilipoli Road and one near Kealia Road. Firefighters then responded to a brush fire off the Kapaa Bypass Road, just south of the roundabout.
Two more fires occurred after 1 a.m. Saturday morning.
Firefighters extinguished a fire located on the makai side of Kapule Highway, between the Lihue Airport and Hanamaulu Beach.
A second fire then broke out near Paliku, also known as Donkey Beach, in Kealia. The location of that fire was difficult for crews to access but the fire was extinguished before reaching nearby homes. It was slightly over an acre in size.
None of the fires resulted in injury or damage to structures.
The causes of the fires are not yet known, but fire officials are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution.
“We have had very warm and dry conditions this week, so it’s important to be prepared,” warned Fire Prevention Captain Daryl Date.
