LIHUE — Over 300 students from across the island participated in the county’s “Kaua‘i Kakou: I Love My Community” art contest, which was part of the public outreach process in the general plan update.
Entries were submitted by a number of elementary schools.
“The children’s artwork are wonderful expressions of how they feel about the communities they live in,” said Marisa Valenciano, a long-range county planner, who coordinated the contest. “It was especially fun for us to see what their ideas are for the future of our island, and we plan to use the artwork as part of the feedback for the General Plan update.”
The grand prize winner Zixin He, a fourth-grade student at Kapaa Elementary School, was presented her award by Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. at the recent Mayor-a-thon. Her prize package included a certificate and a bicycle donated by Kauai Path.
Aljhay Flores, a fourth-grade student at King Kaumualii Elementary School and first runner up, was also recognized at the Mayor-a-thon with a certificate. Other winners included Aaliyah Cadiente-Numazawa, second runner up, Wilcox Elementary School, fourth grade, and Sisilia Koli, honorable mention, Kīlauea Elementary School, first grade.
The winning entries will be included in the actual General Plan update as well as at http://plankauai.com/.
