The Dragonflyz softball teams returned from the Maui tournament with the sportsmanship awards for both its 10 and under team, and the 12 and under team.
Tiffany Keale, a team mom, said the 10 and under team, playing in the Maui tournament for the second year, battled some of the top teams from Oahu and came up short.
“Although they were always down on the scoreboard, they never gave up during the game,” Keale said in an email. “When the games were finished, the girls walked off the field with smiles on their faces. This is why we believe they were selected to receive the tournament’s Sportsmanship Award.”
This is the second year the 10 and under Dragonflyz has earned the sportsmanship trophy which is voted on by the tournament organizers and game umpires.
TheDragonflyz 12 and under team made its first trip to the Maui tournament and also faced some of the top teams.
“They fought hard in the pool play of the tournament,” Keale said. “But they also came up short. In a double elimination format, the Dragonflyz 12U lost its opening game against Team Pono, but rebounded in the second match to take the game in extra innings.”
Facing their third game in the same day, the team came up short against the Strikers.
“The 12 and under girls played hard and never gave up,” Keale said. “They were like the Dragonflyz 10 and under and earned the sportsmanship award for their division.”
