LIHUE — Gerrelyn Mahiai said the blessing and opening of Petco on Monday is the best thing happening on Kauai.
“I’m ready,” she said. “I want to look for pet supplies and grooming supplies.”
Petco opened its first store on Kauai and 10th in state before a sparse audience at Hokulei Village. It is the first tenant in the shopping center to open, greeting customers in the shadow of workers putting finishing touches on the Safeway store and Jack in the Box.
Terry Mayne is the manager of Petco Kauai, which will celebrate its grand opening Friday and Saturday with specials and contests.
“I have my shopping list,” said Michelle Mackler, a dog sitter and walker. “I came to the Kauai Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours hosted by Layton Construction last Thursday, and we got to walk through Petco, so I’m ready with my shopping list.”
Judy Dalton of the Kauai Community Cat Project, a Petco adoption partner, said the opening was exciting because it allows the group seeking homes for kittens and cats a display space and raises awareness of the shortage of homes for adoptable animals.
“We can be here as often as we have a supply of kittens for adoption,” Dalton said.
Sabra Kauka who officiated at the blessing, remembered coming to the store’s groundbreaking in February 2014.
“The development of Hokulei Village, named after the mountain peak in the background, has been pretty fast,” she said.
