LIHUE — Police said Thursday there was a confrontation between two men shortly before a fatal collision early Monday.
Michael Helppie, 37, of Lawai, was struck and killed upon impact by an SUV driven by Evan Craft, 34, near the Kalapaki seawall along Nawiliwili Park, a press release said.
“Police believe Craft and Helppie got into some type of confrontation at a nearby bar just before 1:45 a.m.
The confrontation escalated outside when Craft’s SUV struck Helppie then ran over a concrete piling, where the SUV became stuck,” the release said.
Craft was located nearby at Kalapaki Beach and taken into custody.
He was arrested Tuesday for manslaughter and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, the release said, and was later released under pending investigation.
Police continue to investigate details of the incident.
