The top two placers from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation state qualifying matches were named this year’s KIF tennis all stars. Twelve KIF student-athletes made up the all star list.
Among the boys are singles finalists, Island School senior Davis Huffman and Kauai High School sophomore Braden Myrick. The two boys doubles teams are the Kapaa team, made up of senior Kai Harrison and sophomore Wyatt Harrison, and the Waimea duo, comprised of senior Gilson Guillermo and junior Riley Saiki.
“I played singles pretty much the whole year. We didn’t have too many players. I think that improved me,” Kai Harrison said. “It’s my last year. I won’t have an opportunity to do it again. It’s pretty cool to get that recognition.”
Harrison, who also played for the school’s boys volleyball team, will study at California Polytechnic State University in the fall and intends to major in engineering. He added he wants to try out for the university’s club volleyball team.
Guillermo said he’s glad to have gotten the chance to play at states.
“Just enjoying my senior year and playing with my teammates. Going to states was my favorite achievement,” he said. “I guess it’s an honor fighting for that (boys doubles) title. We worked hard, me and my partner Riley.”
The Menehune senior said while currently undecided, he’s considering either enrolling at Kauai Community College or joining the Army.
Island School girls, junior Michaela Fitzgerald and freshman Mia Fitzgerald, are the two singles all stars. The two doubles teams are the Kauai tandem, seniors Tane Orial and Teyanni Esaki, and the Kapaa team, senior Chelsea Ferrer and sophomore Shannon Sitzler.
“It means a lot. I’ve been an all star all four years of high school for tennis,” Orial said. “It’s nice to end my high school career as an all star. I feel pretty good.”
Orial said she will attend Menlo College in California, majoring in human resources and minoring in business management.
