“Calvin & Hobbes,” in many people’s opinions, is one of the best comic strips ever made. We agree! It is one of our absolute favorites, and we sell these books all the time!
Cartoonist Bill Watterson created a masterpiece of print entertainment, featuring the highly imaginative life of Calvin, a precocious little boy, with his best friend Hobbes, a stuffed tiger who is as real to him as anyone else. Mr. Watterson captures the essence and adventurous spirit of childhood while at the same time keeping the humor at an adult level of sophistication and yet still fun and accessible to younger readers.
Anytime we pick up a “Calvin & Hobbes” book, we are immediately immersed in the detailed drawings and engaging characters that Mr. Watterson created. His first new book release since 2005, “Exploring Calvin and Hobbes — An Exhibition Catalog” is a very personal look at the reclusive Mr. Watterson and his art, featuring a rare 35-page interview revealing information about him, his creative process, and the origins of “Calvin & Hobbes”!
The book is a beautifully presented collection of his original unaltered submissions, which were hand-selected by Mr. Watterson himself, and includes many of his full-image watercolors. We also learn about the strips that influenced him and see several of his other paintings, photographs, early political cartoons, and, best of all, the pre-“Calvin & Hobbes” strip submissions.
It is incredible to see what Calvin originally looked like! One of things we always look forward to in our bookstore is when people of all ages come in and share with us their favorite moments from the “Calvin & Hobbes” series!
