LIHUE —Kauai High School baseball will be playing for third place in the Wally Yonamine Foundation Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state baseball championships at 11 today.
Fourth seeded at the state tournament, Kauai suffered a 4-3 loss to the tournament’s top seed, Maryknoll, Friday at the Les Murakami Stadium at the University of Hawaii campus.
Maryknoll pitcher Jarred Kaneshiro picked up the win, holding Kauai to just three hits from Micah Layosa, John Dumlao and Gunner Vallatini. Kaneshiro allowed three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three, hitting two Kauai batters.
Kauai went to the mound with Brayden Abreu going five innings with four runs allowed on five hits while walking three, striking out one and hitting one batter.
Maryknoll jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning only to have Kauai claw back and deadlock the game with two runs in the second inning and a run in the third inning. Maryknoll went ahead for the win in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Trevor Hirano led the Maryknoll action, scoring twice and getting one of the five hits. Neal Nakasone marked a hit along with Joshua Muneno who also scored once.
