LIHUE — Hui Alu, the Kauai Okinawa club, will present the 2015 Kauai Okinawa Dance Festival, today and Saturday at the Kauai Veterans Center on Kapule Highway in Lihue.
There is no admission for the cultural event that traditionally takes place once every two years.
Gates open from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. each night to an array of Okinawa food, Okinawa dance, cultural displays, a country store, Sanshin performances, and live entertainment.
Okinawa food items, popular among festival attendees, include andagi, a type of Okinawa doughnut, champuru, or stir fry vegetables, Okinawa soba, yaki soba, shoyu chicken, and pig’s feet soup.
Friday night special is the huli huli pig, and the Saturday night special is the shoyu pork.
The event opens with the combined Kauai and Oahu Afuso-Ryu followed by the traditional Japanese bon dance, starting at 6 p.m.
