PRINCEVILLE — Kauai High School took its Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis series, 3-2 for the boys and 4-1 for the girls, over Waimea High School at the Waimea tennis courts Saturday.
On the other end of the island, Kapaa finished splitting its series with Island School at the Makai Golf Club in Princeville under threatening clouds peppered with occasional sprinkles. Kapaa finished the long day by taking the boys’ matches, 4-1 over Island School, while the Warrior wahine celebrated a victory in its girls third doubles in its 4-1 loss to the Voyager wahine.
“It was deja vu all over again,” said Kapaa coach Rick Waneck. “Just like last year’s match, the Kapaa boys team and the Island School girls team remain unbeaten, securing the KIF tennis titles for the second straight year at the Makai Golf Club in Princeville.”
Kapaa breezed through the boys’ matches which played out following a long girls’ series, 4-1 with its only loss coming in the boys first singles when the Voyagers’ Davis Huff downed Matt Steinohrt, 6-3, 6-2.
“Matt played well and I was happy to see him regaining his form from the start of the season following a month of flu and strep,” Wanek said. “Davis has played excellent tennis for three years now and is the favorite going into the state qualifying tournament.”
On the girls’ court, both schools had their hands full as close tight matches was the order of the day in Princeville.
“Although Island School prevailed, 4-1, all the matches were close and hard-fought,” Wanek said. “Four of the five matches went into three sets.”
Kapaa’s Kiarra Tamayose, rebounding from a bout with the flu which kept her from full strength in the past few matches, battled Island School’s Michaela Fitzgerald for three hours on the girls first singles court.
“The match of the day, and the year, so far, was the girls first singles three-hour marathon between Michaela and Kiarra,” Wanek said. “The crowd was treated to some high quality tennis before Michaela outlasted Kiarra, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Friends off the court, both girls played so well with long rallies and excellent shot-making.”
Wanek said despite the loss, he’ll encourage the girls at practice.
“Despite these tough losses, the sun will come up tomorrow and we’ll be back,” Wanek said. “The girls have to be positive and satisfied, but realistic. Their hard work has improved their game almost to the level of the Island School girls whose experience made the difference in Princeville. We have 10 more practices before the state qualifying tournament to get stronger, healthier, and try to peak at the right time of the season.”
