WAILUA — The 36-year-old driver of an Isuzu MPV was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant following a two-car crash on Kuhio Highway in Wailua early Sunday morning. The investigation is ongoing.
A 21-year-old woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, and was taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment, according to a release from the county. She was a passenger in a Mazda Tribute, the other vehicle involved in the crash.
The drivers of both vehicles were not injured.
The incident occurred near the Kuamoo Road junction at approximately 12:55 a.m.
According to witnesses, the Mazda was in the inner northbound lane of the highway when the Isuzu, which was heading in the opposite direction, collided head-on with the Mazda.
It was also reported that the Isuzu left the scene and a witness followed the vehicle until it stopped on the southbound shoulder of the highway just south of Aloha Beach Resort in Nukolii.
The two northbound lanes were closed for approximately an hour following the crash.
