HANAPEPE — A grand slam from the Kapaa Diamonds lit up the opening game of the West Kauai Under 8 Softball Tournament on Friday morning at the Hanapepe Stadium Field D.
“Normally, the coach would hold the girl at third,” said Dawn Cummings, a team mom for the Diamonds. “But this ball was gone, so he just signaled her home.”
The grand slam capped a 12-3 victory over the Lihue Dragonflyz to open the two-day tournament.
Leila Kamakele, tournament director, said there are four teams — Kapaa Diamonds, Lihue Dragonflyz, West Kauai Little Ladies, and Hanapaa Minis, a team from Mililani, Oahu — competing over two days to wrap up the Junior Olympics 8-and-under softball season.
“This is it,” Cummings said. “It’s tournament time! This is the first time Kapaa has fielded an 8 and Under team, and the turnout was great. We had 18 players come out. They played for the past six weeks, and now, it’s tournament time!”
Kamakele said because one team dropped out, the teams will each play each other once with the best record being the tournament winner.
She said West Kauai will reciprocate by traveling to Oahu in May to play in the Hanapepe tournament.
The tournament is sponsored by Teivan’s Mobile Repair, Waste Management Kauai, P&P Catering, Kepa Services, Kuppy Cakes by J, and Daniel Suga General Contractor.
