The Kauai Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation recently held its annual membership meeting and election of officers to the executive committee.
Carl Berg, former vice chair, was installed as chair and remains as Blue Water Task Force coordinator. Barbara Weidner was elected vice chair and is beach cleanup coordinator. Scott McCubbins was elected treasurer and will be beach cleanup co-coordinator. Lori Stitt will serve as secretary.
Gordon Labedz is the Rise Against Plastic, Styrofoam Free Kauai and legislative coordinator. Robert Zelkovsky is the media and publicity coordinator and also the membership coordinator. Rob Brower is the newest executive committee member.
“We have a very strong and knowledgable chair in Carl and each member of the executive committee has their strengths,” said Zelkovsky, outgoing chair. “But our real strength lies in the dedication of the volunteers who do so much much work for the environment.”
Started 30 years ago, Surfrider is a volunteer, ocean environmental organization that works for clean and healthy oceans, rivers and streams, and free and easy access to those resources.
The Kauai Chapter organizes a beach cleanup on the fourth Saturday of every month, weekly cleanups the first three Wednesdays of the month, emergency net patrols removing derelict fishing nets off the beach, tests ocean and stream water quality at 28 sites and provides expertise on environmental and legislative issues.
The executive committee meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at Cafe Coco in Wailua. Meetings are open to the public.
