LIHUE – Kauai police have arrested the driver of a pickup truck involved in Thursday’s traffic crash in Wailua that caused a motorcyclist to be hospitalized.
Kawehi Hoopii, 25, was located Thursday at his home in Kapaa. He was arrested for first-degree negligent injury and accidents involving death or serious bodily injury. Hoopii has been released pending investigation.
Hoopii is believed to be the driver of a Ford Ranger pickup truck, with a green cab and silver bed, which was involved in the crash that occurred about 8 a.m. along Kuhio Highway, fronting the Wailua Golf Course.
According to a preliminary investigation, a motorcyclist was traveling along the inner southbound lane, when he reportedly swerved into the outer lane in an attempt to pass the pickup truck. According to witnesses, the pickup also moved into the outer lane at that time, causing the motorcyclist to lose control and strike a guardrail along the southbound shoulder.
The motorcyclist, a 25-year-old Kapaa man, was medevaced to Queen’s Medial Center where he remains in stable condition.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
