LIHUE — Kauai Police Department officials say they have arrested the driver of a pickup truck involved in Thursday’s traffic crash in Wailua that injured a motorcyclist.
Kawehi Hoopii, 25, was located Thursday at his home in Kapaa and arrested for first-degree negligent injury and accidents involving death or serious bodily injury.
He has been released pending further investigation.
Hoopii is believed to be the driver of a Ford Ranger pickup truck, with a green cab and silver bed, which was involved in the crash that happened around 8 a.m. along Kuhio Highway, fronting the Wailua Golf Course.
According to a preliminary investigation, a motorcyclist was traveling along the inner southbound lane, when he swerved into the outer lane in an attempt to pass the pickup truck.
The truck, according to witnesses, also moved into the outer lane at that time, causing the motorcyclist to lose control and strike a guardrail along the southbound shoulder.
The motorcyclist, a 25-year-old Kapaa man, was medevaced to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he remains in stable condition.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash and urge anyone with information to contact Officer Sarsona at 241-1616.
