LIHUE — A bus crashed into a vehicle on Kaumualii Highway on Tuesday night after the bus driver likely suffered from a medical setback.
The accident occurred about 8 p.m., county spokeswoman Sarah Blane wrote. Officers responded to a report of school bus driving erratically while heading west near the Kauai Humane Society.
The bus reportedly came to a stop in the middle of the highway and stopped traffic. The bus then began moving forward at slow pace, when it struck a four-door sedan stopped along the eastbound lane.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the sedan had sustained minor damage. The lone occupant was not injured.
The 68-year-old female driver of the bus did not report any injuries as a result of the crash. There was no visible damage to the bus, and there were no passengers in the bus at the time of the incident.
The driver, however, appeared to be confused and dazed, Blane said. It appeared that she may have been suffering a medical event. She was transported by medics to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Kaumualii Highway was closed in both directions for roughly 20 minutes to clear the roadway.
