KALAHEO — Team Central B, Hanakila, and Papalina took the latest round of the county’s Boys Division II basketball games Monday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Team Central B 67, Islanders 14
Island School Islanders’ Dominic Lafratta battled back against a 37-2 halftime deficit and scored seven of his game-total nine points in the second half, including a trey in the fifth period.
Kalani Leibow joined the effort with another trey in the final period, his only score of the game. A bucket by Luke Reynolds in the fifth period rounded out the Islanders’ 67-14 final score.
Aaron Uyeda of the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation said the Islanders have a lot of sixth grade players playing in the Division II that’s meant for players in the seventh and eighth grades.
“They didn’t have enough players to field a team of seventh and eighth graders,” Uyeda said. “They got their sixth-grade players to come in. You never realize how big the difference in size is between sixth and eighth grades. It’s good for the younger players, though. They’re getting outscored, but they’re learning.”
Kaimani Tecson helped his team soar to a 29-0 lead following two periods.
Tecson finished with high-point honors at 21. He got help from Travis Duran with 14 points, Kauulu Rittmeister and Cameron Leanio, who added a dozen points each.
Hanakila 43, Kamikaze 24
Hanakila, made up primarily of players from the Hanalei and Kilauea areas, was looking at a 19-18 deficit at the half.
But the North Shore boys broke it open in the second half behind nine points from Jesse Wemmel, including a three-ball, to clinch a 43-24 win.
Jonah Flores, netting five points, including one of seven treys, in the first half, added eight points, followed by John Calvan, Chanson Hawelu, and Keawe Cabebe, who each had seven points.
Micah Matsunaga dropped a trey in the final stanza to finish with five points, followed by Kampbell Hanano, who had four first-half points, and Blake Probasco, who had a trey in the opening frame.
Papalina 57, Hanamaulu 29
Trey Taba and David Sabo each netted nine points with Joshua Rivera adding eight points to lead Papalina to a 57-29 win over Hanamaulu.
Ryan Banasihan rounded out the Papalina scoring with seven points.
Briksdale Maulit topped the Hanamaulu effort with a game-high 13 points with Oscar Langinlur adding six points.
Games continue at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
