A four-vehicle traffic crash on the North Shore could be expected to block traffic for hours — unless one of the drivers involved has a family member return with a tractor to clear the highway.
The non-injury incident occurred about 8:20 a.m. at the intersection of Kuhio Highway and S. Kalihiwai Road.
A SUV traveling south on the highway struck a sedan in front of it, which caused the sedan to collide with a pickup truck. Both the sedan and pickup truck were stopped at the intersection while the truck waited to turn left onto S. Kalihiwai Road. The SUV then crossed the centerline and struck a pickup truck, causing it to strike a guardrail.
“Cars were backed up in both directions for miles,” wrote Denise DuBarry Hay, whose spouse Bill Hay was the driver of the red pickup waiting to turn left. “Thankfully, no one was injured.”
Bill Hay was able to operate his truck and pulled away from the collision.
His son brought a tractor from their nearby farm and they pulled the remaining cars to the side of the road.
