Kudos to Coach Kaipo Kealalio, the Island School staff and volunteers, Swim Kauai Aquatics (Coach Ro and Mary Davis came back to view the competition), and Tom Tannery and his YMCA of Kauai staff for hosting a great KIF swimming championships Saturday!
Gabriel Oberman, father of Hikari Oberman who was part of the KIF record-breaking Boys 200-Yard Medley Relay team, said Hikari, a national Junior Lifeguard winner in paddleboard and beach flags at Virginia Beach as well as the top KIF boys air riflery marksman, was worried about not being able to swim because he dislocated his shoulder — twice — just before the swim season.
Gabriel said there were all kinds of stories at the KIF championships. Andrew Beeksma’s mother is from the Melchor family in Koloa, and freshman Kelta O’Rourke (that’s another Junior Lifeguard winner) had her mom sitting in the VIP section near the officials’ tent.
OK, time to go check on the KIF girls soccer (Waimea soccer coaches and players were checking out the Vidinha action) playoffs for championships Tuesday.
