PUHI — Believe it or not, it’s a home.
A house built from a shipping container was dedicated Saturday at the Kauai Community College in recognition of the student project “Hoouluwehi: Sustainable Living Institute on Kauai,” which is designed to provide students with experience in constructing sustainable housing.
“The prototype home is one example of how Kauai Community College is responding to the growing emphasis on the need for sustainable living practices,” said KCC Chancellor Helen Cox.
Throughout the project, carpentry, electrical installation, welding, and facilities engineering students received hands-on field experience. KCC’s goal is to prepare students to enter jobs with sustainable living solutions and to advance a sustainable living lifestyle on Kauai.
Materials used in the home were reused and repurposed while natural air flow keeps the home ventilated and cool. Space and size reduced the home’s footprint as well as the amount of land used while maintaining a comfortable place to live.
