LIHUE — An early morning accident over the weekend ended with a wrecked pickup, a damaged fast food building and an arrest.
The Kauai Police Department said the incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. Sunday when a 23-year-old male driver in a Toyota Tacoma pickup was attempting to make an illegal left hand turn out of the Lihue McDonald’s.
“Upon pulling out of McDonald’s, the operator lost control of the pickup and veered across both southbound lanes of Kuhio Highway fronting McDonald’s, before driving over the southbound sidewalk and colliding into the front of the building,” county spokeswoman Sarah Blane wrote in an email.
The male driver, Mark Lagazo, was arrested for Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant. He sustained injuries in the accident and was treated at the scene by emergency personnel, according to officials.
The building was damaged as a result of the crash and the pickup sustained major front-end damage.
A spokesperson for McDonald’s said they did not have an estimate of the damage, but that it was mainly cosmetic. Yellow caution tape marked the area where the vehicle struck the restaurant.
The crash remains under investigation.
