WAIMEA — Waimea High School’s varsity girls basketball team defeated Kauai, 32-25 at home Tuesday night.
“The girls played with heart. We figured out we don’t have to be big to win,” said Menehune head coach Brandon Moises. “In the end, you got to compete and you got to be smart. We made smart plays to finish the game.”
Senior guard Tiana Apilado was Waimea’s leading scorer with 7 points. Kauai senior center Riana Ralston led her team with 10 points.
Waimea also won the junior varsity game, 37-13. Kiarra Palacio scored 20 points for the JV Menehune. Shae Erickson scored 5 for the Red Raiders.
Kauai (2-1 KIF) will host Kapaa (2-1 KIF) on Friday and Waimea (1-3 KIF) will play at Kapaa on Tuesday. JV games begin 5:30 p.m. and the varsity will follow.
