LIHUE — A pedestrian who was struck on Kaumualii Highway just east of the Kaumakani Post Office was pronounced dead after being transported to the G.N. Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Saturday night. Police dispatch received a call at 9:33 p.m.
LIHUE — A pedestrian who was struck on Kaumualii Highway just east of the Kaumakani Post Office was pronounced dead after being transported to the G.N. Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Saturday night.
Police dispatch received a call at 9:33 p.m. Saturday reporting the incident where an eastbound sedan struck the pedestrian. According to a county release, an officer in a police vehicle traveling eastbound apparently struck the victim a second time while responding to the scene.
The victim was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihue where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries from the incident were reported.
Kauai Police Department officials closed Kaumualii Highway at 9:45 p.m. for about five hours to investigate the traffic accident. The highway was re-opened around 4 a.m. following the on-scene investigation.
The victim’s identity has not been confirmed.
An autoposy is scheduled for Monday, states the release.
In accordance with departmental protocol, the officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
