LIHUE — Two drivers were injured in a three-car accident that closed Kaumualii Highway near Omao on Thursday night.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m., according to a county news release. The driver of a Nissan sedan attempted to make a left turn onto the highway from Punee Road to head west, when it was struck by a westbound truck.
The collision caused the truck to flip over and land on its roof off the road on private property. The Nissan was then struck by an eastbound Toyota sedan.
The male driver and female passenger in the truck were transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released. None of the occupants of the other vehicles required treatment.
On Friday morning, Kauai Fire Department and medics responded to the home of the truck driver. The male driver apparently collapsed and he was transported back to the hospital. His condition was not known Friday afternoon.
Kaiopua Fyfe, of Lihue, said he and his spouse were returning from Christmas dinner with their children on the Westside, when he came upon the accident just before medical responders had arrived. He saw that three cars were damaged and one had rolled over.
“There were three ambulances present and one left with only flashing lights,” Fyfe said.
Kaumualii Highway was closed for approximately 35 minutes until the injured drivers were evacuated and vehicles were cleared from the road.
