POIPU — John Morris and Loutoa Zoller claimed the turkey and Hydro Flask for the A Division Saturday during the 2015 Mixed Doubles Turkeyshoot at the Poipu Kai Tennis Courts.
“Sometimes we have a lot of people, sometimes we just go out and do it,” said Krystyna Noe, one of the organizers of the Poipu Kai Charity Tennis. “This tournament benefits the Kauai United Way and allows the players to have fun and fellowship. We’re kicking off the holiday season with players playing to win a turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner — or Hydro Flasks.”
Noe, paired with Brant Fuchigami in Flight 3 of the B Division, took both their opening matches against the teams of Steve Stecher and Portia Igarashi, 6-3, 6-4, Saturday, advancing beyond the duo of Danny Arriola and Judy Honda.
Climbing the opposite side, the team of Kimo Honda and Michaela Fitzgerald, a student at Island School, worked up the winner’s bracket with wins over Jose Bayani and Heidi Duarte (6-4, 6-4), and Charlie Ortiz and Mary Lockrem (6-2, 6-1).
Noe and Fuchigami dropped their semis, 4-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) in a tiebreaker, sending Honda and Michaela to face the pair of Adam Hadley and Michelle Fitzgerald in the finals — a mother-daughter confrontation.
Noe said the charity doubles which ended Sunday afternoon marks the final tennis match for 2014.
“We’ll have another charity doubles round on Jan. 3 and 4, again benefiting the Kauai United Way,” Noe said after her match. “The next one will probably be the Plantation Days Doubles in July.”
