The Kauai High School girls soccer team wrapped up its pre-season Saturday, finishing with two wins and a loss at the Hilo High School Invitational soccer tournament on the Big Island.
Following a 2-0 shutout at the hands of the Hawaii Preparatory Academy Friday, the Red Raider wahine rebounded for two wins Saturday, a 4-1 victory over Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii and a 5-0 win over Honokaa.
“Overall, the games were great,” Kevin Devitt, the Kauai coach, said in an email. “It was also nice to see Xavier Fuerte, a former Kauai Soccer Association and Kapaa High School player (he was known as Ikaika), coaching as an assistant coach on the Big Island.”
Scoring for the Kamehameha Schools’ win, Kauai spread its offensive efforts between Kawehi Taniguchi, Caley Caires, Kaitlynne Bukoski and Aleigha “Red” Scovel.
Taniguchi picked up the pace against the Honokaa Dragons, netting two goals with Tailee Tangonan. Caires added a goal each, and Macy Tamura scored off a corner kick.
Kapaa next travels to the Big Island after Thanksgiving to participate in the HPA tournament.
The Kauai Interscholastic Federation starts on Dec. 20 when the Kauai girls host the Island School Voyagers in a varsity-only game starting at 10 a.m. Kapaa will travel to the Hanapepe Stadium to meet Waimea with the junior varsity game scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and the varsity match kicking off at 11:45 a.m. The boys soccer season starts on Jan. 7, when Kapaa varsity tangles with Kauai at Vidinha Stadium starting at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity girls at 7 p.m.
