Triple the fun runs
By the time Marybeth Markham approached the finish line of the Old Koloa Sugar Mill Half Marathon, almost everyone else had finished.
There were just a few race organizers and time keepers watching as she crossed under the arch of balloons in 118th place, more than three hours after the 7 a.m. start. But her place, her time, didn’t matter. The Spokane, Wash., woman raised her arms in triumph, grinned and let out a victory yell. She didn’t win, but it sure felt like it.
“My slowest time yet, but I didn’t die,” she said.
Markham came to Kauai as part of her vow last year to run a half marathon a month to keep herself motivated in her quest to stay healthy and keep the pounds away. Saturday’s race was the highlight, a reward even, of achieving that goal.
“I decided number 12 needed to be someplace special,” she said. “This is pretty exciting.”
Nearly 450 runners and walkers took part in the 12th annual Old Koloa Sugar Mill Run that included a half marathon, a 10K and a 5K, put on by the Rotary Club of Kauai. Conditions were challenging on a hot and humid day with blue skies and sunshine, but runners enjoyed breakfast and awards afterward at Anne Knudsen Park. Half marathoners ran on a new course that included some spectacular ocean views through Poipu. All races started and ended on the Koloa Bypass Road.
Local runners claimed first place in some of the distances, while visitors also did well.
Nicholas Clark of Kalaheo overcame an ailing knee to win the half marathon and defend last year’s title. He finished the 13.1-mile course in 1 hour, 23 minutes and 35 seconds to hold off Renato Desouza of Lihue, who finished in 1:23:44.
“He went faster on the downhills than me,” Clark said. “The finish was uphill, so that helped.”
Desouza, who took third in last year’s half marathon, stayed with Clark for 11 miles before falling back. “I tried to keep up with Nick, but he kind of took off at the end,” he said.
Mary Castelanelli of Kilauea also defended her title in the half marathon, winning in 1:30:30, followed closely by Care Nelson of Victoria, B.C., Canada, in 1:30:37.
While her time wasn’t quite what she wanted, Castelanelli said she used the race as a training run for next month’s Honolulu Marathon. She and Nelson were running together until Castelanelli sprinted away with about a hundred yards to go.
“It feels good,” Castelanelli said. “I just come out here to have fun and enjoy the event.”
Nelson, who was visiting Kauai with her husband, Mark, who won the men’s 10K, said they read about the race and decided to sign up. Both ran competitively in college.
“It seems to happen when we’re on vacation. We just happen to stumble upon races,” she said. “It’s fun to see what they’re like in other places.”
She said it was fun having someone to run with most of the way.
“I could tell Mary was a local favorite,” Nelson said. “Everyone was cheering for her.”
Mark Nelson finished the 10K in 37:26, followed by Kapaa’s Basil Scott in 39:43.
“It was tough,” Nelson said. “I haven’t run much in the past four years.”
An Achilles injury sidelined him from running in 2010, but he stays active with biking and other sports.
“The first half felt great,” he said. “The second was a bit harder.”
Scott enjoyed his race. He pulled away from Chelsea Smith-Wishard, winner of the women’s 10K in 39:54, in the final mile.
“We had a real ‘mano a mano,’ back and forth,” he said. “It was good racing. I was delighted to get her and a little surprised.”
Scott said he tried to relax through the early miles and save some energy for the final stretch.
“That last mile is surprisingly tough,” he said.
Smith-Wishard, who also took first in the 10K last year, said her training hasn’t been what she would like. But other than Scott beating her, it was a good day, she said.
“I definitely died,” she said of the homestretch.
Kaeo Kruse, who grew up on Kauai and has family here but who attends Kamehameha Schools on Oahu, claimed the 5K title in 16:19.
The 16-year-old won a state cross country title on Nov. 3 on Oahu. He’s preparing for the Footlocker regional race on Dec. 6 in California, so he used the 5K for a training run.
He said he last ran the Old Koloa Sugar Mill Run when he was a little boy, and it felt good to be back home with family — and to run, too.
“It was a good race,” he said. “I’ll always love running over here at my home.”
Even those who didn’t win enjoyed the day.
Patrick Schanze of Princeville covered the 10K in 44:31 to take first in his 30-39 age division.
“I’m happy, but I wanted to do it in 43,” he said.
Mike Chastain of Fresno, California, finished the half marathon in 1:52:43. Despite some tough final miles under the sun, he enjoyed the day and said it was a beautiful course with accurate mile splits.
“Whoever organized the race, kudos to them,” he said.
