You could tell it was a gourmet event because Steven Nakata, a culinary arts instructor at the Kauai Community College, was working with Maethelle Battulayan in creating Fried Ice Cream for dessert under a pineapple tree, and Sam Morrentino was serving up hot Cachaca.
Kudos to Chef Martina Hilldorfer and the rest of the culinary arts crew (they even had Mel Bacio working) on hosting the Gourmet Tailgate Party for the UH volleyball game (Pat Watase had the television signal wired for projection of a bigger-than-big screen).
Of course, Mark Oyama had to be there (go Warriors!) and even Billy Gibson returned to the dining facility for the shindig.
Wanda Kau-Shibata made it from congratulating Ed and Cynthia Justus on the 10-year anniversary of Talk Story Bookstore and arrived with special guests, visiting kahuna Keola Conner, Kanoa Switzer and Tam Glancy of Oahu.
Chef Martina said the event was to thank vendors who help with the culinary program throughout the year.
