LIHUE — County of Kauai officials say have reopened Makua Beach on the island’s North Shore following a reported shark encounter on Tuesday afternoon that closed down the Haena beach, which is commonly known as Tunnels.
Some time around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, experienced spear divers reported that a roughly seven- to eight-foot-long shark “aggressively approached them” while they were free diving in a popular snorkeling area known as Tunnels Lagoon, county officials wrote in a Tuesday statement that announced the beach closure.
The divers gave up their catch to the shark and were able to swim away unharmed.
