Two seconds was the difference between first and second place,Thursday during the third race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Gene Wells Memorial Series.
Papaau, which finished third during last week’s race, crossed the line fourth overall on an elapsed sail of an hour, 13 minutes and 10 seconds, but corrected to 1:10:03 PHRF, a mere two ticks ahead of Fast Company.
Fast Company, taking top honors in the first of the Wells Series, was first across the finish line at 1:09:59 elapsed, but ended with a 1:10:05 PHRF corrected time for second place honors.
OZone, taking top honors in last week’s race, slipped across the finish line with a 1:12:08 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:12:15 PHRF for third place.
Bonjolea II, a Sydney 36, filled in fourth place, crossing on a 1:10:21 elapsed sail, second overall, but corrected to 1:14:58 PHRF. Bonjolea II corrected to 1:12:00 Club for top honors in that class.
She was followed by Weatherly (1:18:22 elapsed, 1:18:29 PHRF) and Speedy (1:21:20 elapsed, 1:21:28 PHRF) to round out the fleet.
Trinity, an F-28 trimaran, took a “Did Not Finish.”
Despite the second-place finish, Fast Company holds a slim lead over three races with first, second, and second finishes over OZone’s second, first, third finishes and Papaau’s third, third, and first finishes.
The seven-race Wells Series continues Thursday and the public is invited to view the competition with the NYC Race Committee from the jetty wall area of the Nawiliwili Harbor when first flags fly at 5 p.m.
