Recently through a joint venture of the Kauai Humane Society and Kauai Hospice, pet therapy has been offered to Hospice patients in the Kalaheo to Lihue areas.
This type of therapy is commonly offered in hospices and other types of palliative care units throughout the U.S., but has not been previously available on an individual basis on Kauai. The value of pets and pet therapy has been demonstrated in a number of medical circumstances, and patients are often noted to live longer, have better pain control, or be happier with a pet. So far we have noted a great deal of appreciation from our patients.
The volunteers are members of the Kauai Humane Society who have their own certified pets.
We are in need of additional volunteers for this program. If you have an animal which is naturally affectionate to strangers and you can make occasional one hour visits at a patient’s home or residence, please call Janis Benn at the Kauai Humane Society 632-0610 ext. 111.
Both Kauai Humane Society and Kauai Hospice are independent nonprofits.
