PUHI — Champ Ono, a resident at the Regency at Puakea, said there was a lot of art and memories on display Thursday during the third annual Kupuna Art Showcase.
“This is an event I’m especially proud of,” said Sharon Lasker, director of marketing at the Regency at Puakea. “It demonstrates the creativity and wealth of talent we have in the residents who live here.”
Regency at Puakea joined the nation in celebrating National Assisted Living Week.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. shared a musical number with the 91 residents at the Regency.
The kupuna art showcase contains many pieces that are drawn from personal collections, triggering memories.
“I’m here because after my husband passed away 10 years ago, I can’t take care of my house,” said Susan Matsumoto who was born in Seattle grew up in Southern California and coming to Kauai after meeting her husband, a Kekaha boy, in Chicago. “I learned how to do needlework by teaching myself. In the old days, 100 pound bags of rice had an inner muslin bag. On rainy days, three of us girls would get together and draw houses on the muslin.”
Lasker said of note are the Christmas decorations created by residents.
“These are works of art,” Lasker said. “They’ll be given to family members during the holiday season.”
Activities continue today with a fall fashion show starting at 2 p.m. followed by several musical acts and a professional hula performance from 4 to 7 p.m.
The week comes to a close Saturday with a special showing of “The Sound of Music” starting at 1:15 p.m.
