LIHUE — A Maui man died Thursday night after falling off Kalalau Trail while hiking with friends.
Zachary Rose, 29, fell at approximately 7 p.m. near mile marker 7 of the trail, in an area known as Red Hill, and landed on rocks roughly 50 feet below, according to the Kauai Police Department.
A fellow hiker climbed down the cliff in an attempt to assist Rose, but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Coast Guard rescuers flew into the area Thursday night and located the group. The man with Rose had suffered a leg injury and was flown to the Lihue Airport. Medics met the injured hiker at the airport, but he declined medical treatment.
Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 took over recovery efforts Friday morning. Rose’s body was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The remaining three hikers in Rose’s party were also flown out of Kalalau Friday morning. Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, is assisting Rose’s friends and family.
Kauai police and personnel from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources also responded to the scene Friday morning. Police continue their investigation of the incident, but foul play is not a suspected factor.
An autopsy is scheduled for next week.
