LIHUE — Two uniformed officers and two departments of the Kauai Police Department were honored Friday for locating dozens of unregistered firearms and the suspected owner.
Sgt. Collin Nesbitt said that in June, there were concerns about an individual who wanted to register two assault weapons with KPD. With information produced by the Weapons Registration staff and the records department, the Patrol Services Bureau obtained a search warrant of a suspect believed to be the source of the two weapons.
A search of the suspect’s residence produced more than 50 unregistered firearms and other illegal unrelated items.
“This has helped to protect the quality of life of Kauai residents,” said Chief of Police Darryl Perry. “These unregistered firearms could have gotten out to the community and caused harm to our citizens.”
Accepting the awards on behalf of staff on Friday were Sgt. Kennison Nagahisa, Acting Lt. Anthony Morita, Jeaneth Panoy, the acting weapons registration clerk, and Joni Arakaki, records analyst, on behalf of Eunice Apeles, acting police records unit supervisor.
