LIHUE — Veronica Carillio and Lourdes Domingo of the Kekaha Senior Center never got the word.
Thursday, the pair showed up with origami creations for display at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair.
“Apparently, they never were told there was going to be no Home Show,” said Sandi Kato-Klutke of the Kauai County Farm Bureau. “But we let them set up and display as an enhancement to the vegetables and produce.”
Laurie Ho, Kauai County Farm Bureau president, was thrilled when George Mukai of Kapaa showed up with a carload of produce.
“Wow! The roots have arrived,” Ho said, noting a ginger root specimen. “Our theme is ‘Back to Our Roots,’ so we need to have some root vegetables. Plus, look at that taro!”
Laura Kawamura of the Cooperative Extension Service was busy overseeing the 4-H Cloverbud exhibit.
“This is bigger than it’s ever been,” Kawamura said.
She said Chad Andrade, one of the 4-H Livestock members, got a grant and did the work to expand this section.
“The farm fair is more than just competing for prizes — it’s about learning life lessons, too,” she said.
Chantal Rusaw, a 4-H member, was also volunteering with the Kauai High School FFA.
“This year, I’m hoping to sell a goat and a lamb,” Rusaw said.

Admission to the event is $30 for the first 125 participants who will get to sample Kauai Grown plates from six top chefs, with proceeds going to Kauai’s charities.
The popular Keiki Building Contest with LEGO Bricks will be held noon Sunday at the agricultural tent.
