HONOLULU – The first day of school will have to wait for some students.
The Hawaii State Department of Education announced Thursday that four Kauai schools will be closed Friday following a boil water advisory from the Kauai Department of Wate .
The schools, Kauai High, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle, King Kaumualii Elementary and Wilcox Elementary, have a combined enrollment of about 3,500 students. Friday would’ve been the first day for the 2014-15 school year at those schools.
The water system became compromised during a construction project in Hanamaulu, according to the Kauai Department of Water. The water is being tested and results are expected to be available Friday.
Kauai Complex Area Superintendent Bill Arakaki said the schools were closed as a precaution to ensure the health and safety of the students, teachers, administrators and support staff.
Schools not in Hanamaulu and Lihue are expected to open Friday.
