With the first day of school just around the corner, Sharon Lasker wanted to collect supplies for children who need them.
The chairwoman of the Guildas Backpack Brigade put out word in The Garden Island that at least 37 children needed help before school started Aug. 1. The group, which acts as the volunteer arm for Child and Family Service, let it be known they could use as much help as they could get.
Their request didn’t fall on deaf ears. And it was an 8-year-old who led the way.
Kadee Parubrub, a soon-to-be fourth-grade student at the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School, wanted to make sure every child had school supplies. It was her way of spreading the joy and celebrating her upcoming autumn birthday as well.
She not only adopted a child to sponsor, Kadee and her mom Sherri donated 20 new backpacks, each with a few school supplies and a tag designed by Kadee reading: “You are never too young to make a difference.”
“I am so excited to go back to school,” said Kadee, who made it her mission to share that infectious feeling with other students. “I’ve been counting down the days. I love school, and I did my school supply shopping very early. I had so much fun.”
Her mom, Sherri, said Kadee decided to perform nine random acts of kindness to celebrate her ninth birthday. She wanted the Backpack Brigade to be one of the recipients. They plan to make it a tradition.
Sherri hopes Kadee’s mission can start a chain reaction for others, young and old alike, to do their part to show the true aloha spirit.
“I’m so proud of her for wanting to help other children in need with such enthusiasm and compassion,” Sherri wrote. “I encourage her to always do good and will support her in everything she chooses to do. Her birthday isn’t until October, but because there was a need and she had already prepared to have school supplies for children, it worked out perfectly.”
