LIHUE – Nine buildings at the Lihue Court Townhomes are currently undergoing a major facelift.
The $805,000-plus exterior renovation project, which began last week, includes replacing the siding and windows; installing new entry and screen doors and house trim; new caulking and a fresh coat of paint. Completion is slated for April 2015.
Funding for the project is provided through the HOME Investment Partnership Program, $711,000, and the Community Development Block Grant program, $94,295. These grants are administered by the County of Kauai.
Other entities that were involved in bringing the project to fruition include the County Council, County Housing Agency, and Mutual Housing Association of Hawaii, property owner and manager.
The general contractor is C.R. Design and Construction and Agor Architects provided its services pro-bono.
“I’m delighted that this project is underway,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “It is important that we all work together to preserve the existing affordable housing units on the island as well as collaborate on new affordable housing projects.”
There are 163 units at the Lihue Court Townhomes consisting of one-, two- and three-bedroom units.
The property is located on 8.9 acres in downtown Lihue.
Amenities include: a community garden; childcare facility; multi-purpose center with a 24-station computer area; playground equipment and a recycling center.
