NAWILIWILI — Nine sites of the county’s Summer Enrichment Program turned in more than 800 pounds of nonperishable food to the Kauai Independent Food Bank Thursday.
The results are from a food drive coordinated by the Summer Enrichment Program.
“We had a theme of ‘Building Communities’ this year,” said Fiana Moe, program coordinator. “We asked the students to help the community if they could by bringing in a canned good.”
Moe said the overall program was coordinated by Shereen Doi, a graduate of Oregon State University, and added to by a separate food drive headed by Koloa site manager Pat Ho.
“Koloa started its own drive, and when they found out about the Summer Enrichment Drive joined the effort,” Moe said. “They had more than anyone else because they started earlier.”
Kelvin Moniz, KIFB executive director, said Koloa collected more than 500 pieces of nonperishable food.
“A lot of this food goes back to helping feed the youth through the backpack program,” Moniz said.
