KALAHEO — Two new sites have been added to the 2014 Unchartered Waters Sports Ministry Kauai Sports Camp which started Monday in Kalaheo and Waimea.
Waimea, with nearly 25 campers, opened with about 20 volunteers working through an itinerary of basketball, soccer, cheerleading, and flag football at the Waimea Canyon Park.
“With the addition of the Waimea and Lihue sites, both new to the camps, we thought we would see a drop in the Kalaheo site,” said Pastor John Zimmerman of the Kalaheo Missionary Church. “But we have nearly 150 campers, including the sold-out Team 45, or youngsters 4 and 5 years old. They don’t seem to mind playing in the rain, either. I guess it’s like having a second shower.”
Kristi Akamine, a camp coordinator, said registration for both the Lihue and Kapaa sites are still being accepted up until the start Monday.
Lihue, which will host its camp in the Lihue County Park behind the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall has nearly 100 participants registered with 60 volunteers for its curriculum of basketball, soccer, cheerleading and flag football.
Kapaa will host its camp at the Wailua Houselots Park with about 100 participants registered and 50 volunteers.
Akamine said youth between the ages of 6 through 12 interested in registering for the Lihue camp can call Vaughn Beyer at 651-7982, and youth between the ages of 4 through 12 interested in registering for the Kapaa camp can call Susan Riddle of the Kapaa Missionary Church at 822-5594 or Rae Nam at Crossroads Christian Fellowship at 823-8328.
There is a registration fee of $35 per camper and scholarships are available.
