LIHUE – Hours and hours in the studio counting out dance steps, perfecting their craft and fully committing to their art paid off in a big way for 19 Kauai dancers recently.
The Excel dance troupe brought home the Best World School trophy after showing off their moves in a routine and scoring the highest out of all the teams participating during the Dance Grand Prix Europe competition in Barcelona, Spain. More than 500 dancers from 15 countries performed in the four-day event.
“We are honored and very excited to say that we won,” said Sherry Holcomb, a 1988 Kapaa High School graduate who has coached the hand-selected all-star group each year since it was founded 18 years ago.
The students of the all-star dance troupe range in age from 10 to 21 years old and rehearse every Sunday afternoon together in a Lihue church. They brought home first place in their division for hip hop dance, as well as top honors for choreography.
Two years ago when the Kauai dance troupe competed in Italy they also won the best world school title.
