The Merv Lopes Kauai Classic Hoops tournament with 80 games on tap starts Thursday and continues through Sunday.
Coach Clarence Sales, of host Team Central Basketball, said there are 27 boys basketball teams, including one from Alaska, participating in three divisions: division 1, for players 12th grade and under, division 2, for players ninth grade and below, and division 3 for players in the seventh grade and lower.
Sales said the tournament also added a girls division for 12th grade and under. He said in addition to the tournament, there will be goodwill games for the ninth and fifth grade girls divisions.
“The tournament tips off Thursday with a goodwill game featuring the fifth grade and under Team Central going up against Upcountry Elite from Maui at Island School,” Sales said. “Other goodwill games, which will be on the hardwood on the opening day of the tournament, will be the ninth grade division girls Kamikaze team coached by Keven Hanano going up against Upcountry Elite at Kapaa High School starting at 5 p.m.”
The public is invited to view the games which will be played at Island School, Kauai High School and Kapaa High School over a four-day period.
The girls division championship game will be played 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Island School, and the boys championship will be played 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Island School.
