Time for a few mahalos, starting with the Poipu Rotary.
If you don’t know about the movies at Poipu Beach, you should. The Rotary Club of Poipu Beach is putting on its annual movies on the beach on Kauai’s sunny South Shore. This event kicked off Friday night with Lilo & Stitch and was quite a success. Despite showers and downpours, the Rotarians faced the storm with a smile.
Families gathered with chairs, blankets and umbrellas, ready for whatever Mother Nature had in store on the lawn fronting Brennecke’s restaurant around 6 p.m. Some enjoyed a quick swim in the ocean before the majority of the crowd came. Others made it a beach day and stayed for the movie.
The Koloa School took care of the low-cost food and refreshments and the audience was asked to join in hula dancing and some took advantage of the opportunity.
The next movie, Spy Kids, set for July 18, will help kick off Koloa Plantation Days. It will be followed with the final movie, Despicable Me 2 on Aug. 15. There will be entertainment prior to each show.
The Rotary Club of Poipu deserves a round of applause for a great summer line up for the families of Kauai. Let’s cross our fingers and hope for better weather for the next movie on the beach. For more information, visit www.poipurotary.org
Kudos also to the golfers who participated in the Kauai Easter Seals fundraiser on Sunday at Kauai Lagoons golf course. It was a terrific event that attracted nearly 150 golfers to raise funds for a wonderful cause. From the ball drop to the shot-making on the course to the banquet and awards afterward, it was a festive, spirited crowd. Well done, also, to the sponsors and the organizers for making this one a winner.
And though we’ve already given it a great deal of praise, a final mahalo to the sixth annual Mayor-a-thon at Kapaa Beach Park on Saturday. Anything that unites the community for health, fitness and fun — with free food, prizes, shirts — deserves our participation and support. We’re glad to do both.
Kauai, as always, steps up without hesitation to answer the call. That will never change.
